James W. Fairfield CT. How often do solar eclipses occur? I read in the paper it was the first 'full' solar eclipse in 3 years. Do you know what they mean by that?

    Hi James.
By 'full' I assume they mean total. Some sort of solar eclipse occurs somewhere in the world about twice a year, but total eclipse are less common. You can see a list of solar eclipses for 2001-2010 (of all kinds) here:
    http://sunearth.gsfc.nasa...v/eclipse/solar.html

total= moon completely covers the sun
partial = moon partially covers the sun
annular = moon covers most of the sun except for a bright ring going all the way around
hybrid = an eclipse is total in some places on Earth and annular in others

    cheers,
    Terry
