This is a question scientist are studying hardly at the moment! The details are not clear, but in general solar storms occur when large magnetic structures on the Sun get suddenly unstable and erupt. Different eruptions that are powered by magnetic energy occur frequently when solar activity is high and include coronal mass ejection (CMEs), solar flares and prominence eruptions. The connection between these different types of eruptions is not clear. For example, sometimes we observe a CME together with a flares and a prominence eruption and sometimes just a CME.
