Katie S. (FWMS) What will we do when the sun burns out? How will we live? Will we live on Mars?

Hi Katie. We don't expect the Sun to burn out for a very long time, billions of years. If people are still around then they might be very different from how they are now. Who knows where they will even want to live.

Before the Sun 'burns" out it will expand into a red giant. At that point it might make sense to move outwards if we want to be in a temperature zone like the Earth is in now. Later when the Sun dies down it might make sense to move inwards.

It has been suggested that this could be done by moving the entire Earth. One idea is to swing asteroids by the Earth so as to change Earth's orbit very slowly in the right direction. Very science fictional!

    Cheers, Terry
