Hi Katie, Planets in the solar system are named after gods in the Roman and Greek mythology. The names of the planets that were discovered before the telescope have the same names that ancient Romans called them. The planets that were discovered more recently were named by the astronomers who found them. For example Neptune was the Roman god of the see and Mars the Roman god of war.
