How do you find out the different layers of the sun? Justin G (fwms)

    Hello Justin,

The different layers of the solar atmosphere are disntiguished essentially by their temperature. SO by looking at the Sun at different wavelengths we can see each fo the regions separately. The higher the temperature the higher energy the light so the million degree corona emits in the Extreme ultraviolet and X-ray ranges, the 10,000 degree chromosphere emits red light (h-alpha) and the cool 6000 degree surface emits optical light.

We learn about the different parts of the solar interior from a combination of stellar modeling and helioseismology observations where we use the oscillations of the Sun to probe the interior. See http://solar-center.stanf...helioseismology.html for more information on this.
