    what will happen to earth if the sun burns out? what about all the other planets? Justin S (fwms)

    Hi Justin,

    When the Sun burns out it will first become what is called a Red Giant. When it does this it will expand in size, swallowing up at least Mercury and Venus and probably Earth as well. However, there are some thoughts that when this happens Earth (and perhaps some of the other planets) may be pushed out of its current orbit away from the expanding Sun just enough to survive being engulfed. However, when the Sun collapses back in to form a white dwarf the Earth may be pulled back into the Sun. So, it is a little uncertain exactly how things will go, but it doesn't look good.

    Of course, this whole thing won't happen for about 5 billion years so no need to get too worried now.
