About how many more years will the sun last, and when it does die do you think it will be replaced by another star? Eliana, (FWMS)

    Hello Eliana,

The Sun will be around for a long time yet. For the next 4.5 billion years it will remain pretty much as it is, burning hydrogen to create Helium and light. Then it will evolve to a Red Giant star about 100,000 bigger than it is a present when it starts to consume the helium. This process goes on until all of the available fuel is used up and it settles into a black dwarf stage. The Earth will be long gone by that point being swallowed up by the atmosphere of the Red Giant Sun.
