    Dear Alec,

    We are protected here on Earth from solar storms by the Earth's magnetic field. However, astronauts who are in space farther away from Earth's magnetic field may be exposed to a lot of radiation during a solar storm. Although it is not necessarily immediately dangerous to astronauts, they might experience health problems later on in their lives related to too much exposure to radiation.
