    Hi Kayla,
    The astronauts in the Space Shuttle and Space Station are fairly low down inside Earth's magnetic field, which helps shelter them from the effects of solar storms.
    If the Sun seems to be especially active they stay inside the Shuttle or Station and avoid going outside, where they would only be protected by their space suits.

    Sending people to Mars would be more tricky. It is something NASA will have to work on and study.

    That is a really good question. To follow up on a slightly different aspect, solar storms actually pose dangers to high-altitude airplanes and those (including commercial jets) flying cross-polar routes. Nothing deadly for the most part, but it in fact is something that is starting to be recognized as a hazard for pilots and crew of airplanes.
