A solar eclipse is when the moon is exactly lined up between the Earth and the Sun, so that from Earth the bright face of the Sun is blocked out by the moon

A lunar eclipse is when the Earth is exactly lined up between the Sun and the Moon, so that the moon goes into the Earth's shadow, and when we look at the moon we see the shadow of the Earth on it.
