The term "solar storm" often refers to the large ejection of mass and energy from the Sun in the form of "Coronal Mass Ejections" and flares (most people are more familiar with flares). The Coronal Mass Ejections can travel extremely fast (1 million -2 million miles per hour!) and carry a lot of mass with them. When these "storms" are headed toward the Earth, they interact with the Earth's magnetic field (which protects us here on the surface) and can cause beautiful aurora. We often refer to these effects as "space weather".
