    I've been loving seeing all the wonderful data of this large sunspot over the last week. It's been great seeing the flare data and just watching the community get so excited about the region.

    It was also especially neat to see the huge sunspot during the partial solar eclipse! It is now over 16 earths in size!

    Howdy;

    As I said in the parallel thread, not only was this spot big, it was complicated - the magnetic fields all twisted up (which means it is storing a lot of extra magnetic energy...). When some of that energy is released suddenly - a solar flare! What has been especially interesting is that this region has flared a lot, but has not produced Coronal Mass Ejections, i.e. has not thrown a bunch of mass into space, just light & radiation. Generally, big flares like this region has produced also create CMEs, but this one has been a bit unusual by being flare-active but CME-quiet. Interesting....! :-)
