Is it likely that the sun will turn into a black hole?

The Sun is an average size star, so doesn't have quite enough mass to become a black hole. At the end of its life it will become a white dwarf.

and if you're interested, there is a recent National Geographic out which has a great article on black holes, with a drawing of a black hole on the cover. I believe it is from the last couple of months. -KD
