In 2005, we held two “One Earth, One Universe” workshops, with the goal of supporting existing and emerging collaborations between NASA and the Native American community by providing professional development opportunities that involve NASA education specialists, research scientists, and Native American colleagues. These workshops were designed to increase the cultural competencies of NASA education and science personnel, focusing on Native science, Native American perspectives, and diverse cultural traditions. Discussion topics included:
- How exploration of the Earth, Moon, Mars and other worlds can take into account Native American perspectives
- How to best work with students and the public of indigenous heritage
- Parallels in Native ways of knowing and Western science
- Ethical issues in science
