I do not doubt that the Philae lander will successfully touch down on Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko on November 12. As the comet approaches the Sun, it is to be expected that outgassing will increase and this has been observed already. Rosetta will accompany the comet through perihelion, or closest approach to the Sun, in August 2015. Rosetta has been analyzing the gases coming from the comet, which include hydrogen sulfide, water, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, ammonia, methane, methanol, formaldehyde, hydrogen cyanide, sulphur dioxide, and carbon disulphide. Rosetta's objectives include the study of the origin of comets, of what the nucleus is made, and how cometary activity changes with approach to the Sun. In addition, Rosetta has passed two asteroids and studied their suface and composition.
