Hi,
The Sun is almost a sphere, but not quite. It is actually squashed just a bit - flatter at its poles and wider at the equator. This is because it is spinning. Although the general cause is understood, the the details of exactly how much it is squashed and how it changes over time is an area scientists research (see http://news.nationalgeogr...science-space-nasa/) because it may tell us something about processes at work inside the Sun.
Cheers,
Terry
