Hi my name is Timmy Sheehan, I am an 8th grade student and i would like to know, approximately how long it will take for the "Voyager" to leave our galaxy and then go into the next?

    Hi Timmy,

You probably read that Voyager has just left the region of space influenced by our Sun and has entered "interstellar" space - the space between stars.

Well, it has a very long way to go to leave our galaxy ...I calculate that it would take 600 million years just to reach the edge of our galaxy. To get to the Andromeda galaxy, it would take 80 times longer.

Even getting to Proxima Centauri, the star nearest the Sun, would take 80,000 years.

Unfortunately, Voyager's on-board power supply is fading and communication with Earth won't be possible after about 2023.
