Remember that the sun goes through an 11 year cycle where the number of sunspots seen on the sun goes from a small number (solar minimum) to a large number (solar maximum). So there are times when the Sun will have little to no sunspots and little to no solar activity. Also remember that if you are looking at an image of the Sun, chances are you are looking at a picture of the side of the Sun that is facing us. So remember the Sun rotates, so at the moment it looks like there aren't spots visible, but we had some spots rotate over the limb and they are no on the backside of the Sun.
