The construction spans an area of about 4.5 square kilometers, and is thought to have supported as many as 10,000 people during the Terminal Classic Period (ca. 800-1000). This would have been near its population saturation; archaeologists who have studied the settlement history think that crops were sewn even between the residential buildings. Another 7,000 people could have lived in the less densely populated areas surrounding the city's core. Reasons for Sayil's seemingly sudden abandonment are unknown.
