These caves are truly gigantic! Over time, silicon, salts and other minerals drip down from the ceiling (stalactites). At the same time, the drops begin to make mounds that aggregate and grow up from the floor (stalagmites). When these stellactites and stelagmites meet, they form columns of rock and silts like these. These were made by placing the hand on the wall of the cavern and spraying black paint over it. It is not known when these handprints were made, perhaps in the Postclassic period.
