So the altar and the nave shown here are built of stones hewn by Mayan hands centuries before the arrival of the Spanish. The rest of this church would have been made of wood with a thatch roof. The Spanish Conquest occurred between 1530-1697 A.D. The Spanish Capital, Mérida, located 8.7 miles (14 kilometers) south of Dzibilchaltún, was founded in 1542 A.D. on the former Mayan city of Tiho, and remains the modern capital of the state of Yucatan.
