How does understanding the Sun lead to understanding the rest of the universe?

That is a great question! The important point is that we can make much more detailed observations of the Sun than the other stars that are much further away. Understanding the Sun will set a background to understand the other stars in the universe. Solar observations give us an opportunity to study many interesting processes (like acceleration of particles to high energies by solar eruptions and turbulence) that help us to understand complicated fundamental physical phenomena that take place all over the universe.
