Robert L I've heard that the sun is studied from the south pole (antartica), is this true, and what difference can it make?

    Dear Robert,

Antarctica offers a vantage position to study the vast region of 'geospace' where the solar wind interacts with the magnetosphere (magnetic field) of the Earth. This is because the magnetic field 'focuses' the effects of geospace into the polar regions. Antarctica has the land mass required to place instruments at high latitudes, near the auroral oval for example.
