    when was it first noticed that magnetism played the major role on the sun?

    Hi Kevin,

    The first person to measure the strong magnetic fields in sun spots was George Ellery Hale in the 1920's using the Mt. Wilson observatory in California. Before that in the 1850's, though, Edward Sabine noticed that activity in the Earth's magnetic field seemed to be connected to the sunspot cycle.
