    Hi Junior,

The thing to remember about solar flares is that they have been happening for a very long time - probably the entire life of the Sun, and the Earth and its inhabitants have been getting along fine.

This is because we are protected by Earth's atmosphere which keeps out the radiation from flares. The Earth's magnetic field also helps, especially when there is a coronal mass ejection (CME). CMEs, which often happen with large flares, actually blow off the Sun into space. But, again, we are protected from them by Earth's atmosphere and magnetic field.

The wrinkle in this is that some of our technologies can be affected by space weather events like flares and CMEs. They can cause problems for communications, spacecraft, power systems, and other things. So we should keep an eye on them, but there is no reason to think a flare could destroy the world or anything like that.

    Terry
