How long does the light from the take to reach us on Earth, how do scientists measure this?

We know the Sun is 93 million miles away from the Earth and we know that the speed of light is 186,000 miles per second so we can calculate that it takes 500 seconds (a little over 8 minutes) for the Sun's light to reach Earth.
