Is there a historical record of when the first solar eclipse was observed, noted, or understood?

    Hi Veronica,

    That's an interesting question.

People have been watching the sky for thousands of years, but we don't have written records for all of human history. I think it would be impossible to say exactly who was the very first person to ever observe a solar eclipse. However, the earliest recorded observations of solar eclipses may come from China around 1600-1050 BC. You can learn more about these early eclipse observations here: http://eclipse99.nasa.gov...itions_morechina.htm
