    The magnetic fields around sunspots can be measured from telescopes on Earth (or from space) using an instrument called a magnetograph. A magnetograph works by measuring very small changes in the wavelength of light emitted by certain elements when they are immersed in a magnetic field. The image from a magnetograph is called a magnetogram. You can see some magnetograms at http://solar-center.stanf...s/magnetograms.html.
