how are the magnetic fields determined or studied in or around the sunspots?

The magnetic fields around sunspots can be measured from telescopes on Earth (or from space) using an instrument called a magnetograph. A magnetograph works by measuring very small changes in the wavelength of light emitted by certain elements when they are immersed in a magnetic field. The image from a magnetograph is called a magnetogram. You can see some magnetograms at
