    Hi.
    For a long time I think that people studying the Earth's magnetic field called disturbances in the Earth's magnetic field "geomagnetic storms" or other related terms.

    Now that we know that many of these storms are related to kinds of solar activity, people sometimes call related solar activity, like coronal mass ejections "solar storms".

    I should probably say, though, that the term "solar storm" is a bit vague. When scientists are talking to each other we usually say "coronal mass ejection" or "energetic particle event" or something more specific. "Solar storm" is a lot more catchy, though.
