Mark (dia) Why is the core of a sunspots much darker than it's outer portion? Is it cooler there, more than the outer part?

Hi Mark,
Yes, that is right - it is even cooler in the center. That is where the magnetic field is the strongest. The strong magnetic field keeps the warm material from deeper in the Sun from coming up to the surface in that spot.
