Hi JB! During an unusually large geomagnetic storm that occurred in 1859, people reported seeing low‐latitude red aurora in Mexico, Cuba, and Hawaii. This famous storm in 1859 is now known as the Carrington Event because the solar flare that preceded the storm was observed by astronomer Richard Carrington in the morning of 1 September 1859. Dr. Liz MacDonald mentioned reports of aurora at low latitudes during this storm in yesterday's online seminar about the Aurorasaurus project. Her presentation is archived on YouTube, in case you missed it.
