I have a 5-inch Celestron that I can use for night-time observing, but I also have a solar filter, which fits over the front end of the telesopc, so that I can safely view the Sun. I also have a sunspotter.

By the way, never use a solar filter that screws into an eyepiece. Sunlight will be focused onto that eyepiece, which will heat up and crack.

I was given a small telescope for Christmas when I was a teenager. It was not fancy, but I could see Jupiter and its moons, and the rings of Saturn with my telescope. I also used binoculars to look at comets. I don't have a fancy solar viewer, but I have used binoculars, and an old shoebox to project an image of the Sun to watch a partial solar eclipse and the Venus transit a few years ago. The setup I used was sort of like this -
