Sunspots are the result of magnetic field emerging from below the surface of the Sun; the emergence of a bundle of flux can take several days. If two bundles of magnetic field emerge close to one another, they will merge together. The emergence process is not very well understood by scientists. We do know that sunspots are cooler than the bright material surrounding them.
