Hi John,
At the base of a sunspot in the photosphere (what we think of as the Sun's surface, even though it is not solid) the magnetic field is a few thousand Gauss (Gauss is one of the units used to measure magnetic field strength). This is much higher than Earth's magnetic field, which is only around half a Gauss.
