how come more eclipses take place over the oceans, rather than over land?

Hmmm, I've never done a statistical analysis of how many eclipses can be seen over land versus over the ocean. If you take a look at
http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/eclipse.html
, you can see the paths of eclipses in both the past and the future. You could use this to determine if it is true that more eclipses take place over the oceans rather than over land. Keep in mind that lunar eclipses have a much wider path than solar eclipses, so naturally the path of a lunar eclipse will cover more of the planet.
