I don't work a second job because I make enough money as a scientist that I don't need to have another paying job right now. However, I have done some volunteer work in our community. Several years ago, I was a regular volunteer at the Science Museum of Minnesota, and now I am a volunteer for the Landlocked Film Festival.

I have done some teaching, not really for the money, but for the contact with students. I also volunteered with the von Braun Astronomical Society for over fifteen years, which took a lot of my time. Currently, I just do some farming at the weekend.

Shawn, as a graduate student in astronomy, I get paid a monthly stipend to pay living expenses while I work toward my degree. This is enough to live on, but there definitely aren't any grad students living like kings! For most sciences, you can make a reasonable living, but you certainly don't go into a scientific field to get rich. Luckily, astronomy is one of the academic fields that do pay reasonably, so that most people who love it can choose it as a career without having to work a second job to pay bills.
