    Hi Ashley,

I do not have any relatives who are scientists. I am the first person that I know of in my family to work as a scientist. I also do not have a second paying job. I earn enough for my living expenses with my current job as a scientist. However, I do some non-paid volunteer activities in our community in addition to my paying job. I think this is pretty typical for a lot of people.

My husband, Tom HIll, is a scientist - he studies Jupiter and Saturn and is on the Cassini team. We met in graduate school at Rice. Many women scientists are married to other scientists. The converse is not the case - there aren't enough women scientists to go around!
Both my parents were medical doctors, which certainly is a science! My father's brother was a rocket engineer at White Sands... he was truly a "rocket scientist"!

My niece and my son both got engineering degrees, so we have some scientists in the younger generation too.

As for second jobs, I do have a company that sells and installs portable planetariums. We got a Cooperative Agreement from NASA to create the technology, and now we market the domes around the world. We have over 100 installations in 25 countries and 25 states. I don't get a salary from it, though... I do it for the love of teaching people. My company websites are discoverydome.com and spaceupdate.com

greetings, in my case, I do come from a long line of at least technically minded people. My grandfather was an engineer, my father is an attorney who worked primarily at high-tech companies. my mother was a computer programmer back in the 1960s, then went back to school and became a toxicologist. My sister sort of escaped this trend, her expertise lies in history and public relations, but she is married to a physicist, too!
