Earth to Sky Webinar 1: Basics of a total solar eclipse

Dr. Bryan Mendez will focus this first presentation on what we can expect to experience during a solar eclipse (total and partial), the basics of a solar eclipse, and the celestial mechanics that make eclipses possible.  More details will be provided soon about the entire series, as well as instructions for  joining the webinar sessions.  All webinars will be archived at our Earth to Sky website.

About the Webinar Series

For the first time in over a century a total solar eclipse will be visible over the entire United States, August 21, 2017 To help you be prepared for the many thousands of additional visitors expected at public sites, please plan to join any or all of our eclipse 2017 webinars.

Through interactive sessions, the Earth to Sky Interpreting the Eclipse Webinar Series will provide opportunities for interpreters and other informal educators to learn from NASA experts about the science and mechanics of a total solar eclipse, the nature of our Sun, recent research about Earth’s Moon, and how the Sun-‐Earth-‐Moon system interactions affect life on our planet; learn about and gain access to a variety of eclipse-‐related  hands-‐on activities and many NASA eclipse resources; and explore and exchange ideas for interpreting the eclipse, including ways to tie this amazing celestial event to natural and cultural themes at your site.

Webinar series developed and presented  by Earth to Sky and NASA Heliophysics Educator Consortium

This spectacular total solar eclipse will be visible within a 70-mile wide band stretching across the continental U.S. beginning in mid-‐morning on the Oregon coast, crossing the United States, and finally disappearing on the South Carolina coast by mid-afternoon. Those in the path of totality will have the rare opportunity to safely see the Sun’s corona, the beauty of Baily’s beads and the dazzling diamond ring effect. This is a unique opportunity to share the excitement of science and the wonder of the Sun and Moon as they create a total solar eclipse on Earth! You can get a sense of how the eclipse will progress at your location at http://bit.ly/2ffhTdi
Everyone in the continental U.S. will see at least a partial eclipse!
