Day of the Dead is a celebration observed throughout Mexico and around the world. The modern festival occurs from October 31-November 2. It is a time to honor and remember friends and family who have died. The modern mainstream holiday has its roots in pre-Columbian Indigenous practices and Christian traditions (which themselves have roots in pre-Christian practices in Europe). The origins of this modern holiday have connections to astronomical events, especially to seasonal cycles of the Sun. During this Webinar we will examine the astronomical origins of some of the Maya and other cultural traditions associated with Day of the Dead.

The THEMIS-ARTEMIS Education/Public Outreach team will participate in UCLA’s annual “Exploring Your Universe” event in Los Angeles on Sunday, November 16, 2014. This free event is open to the public, including students and families. Activities for all ages include workshops, faculty and graduate student talks, planetarium shows, solar telescope viewing, comet making, weather tours, dinosaur fossils, physics demos and much more!
